TORONTO – A Canadian drug company that sells a drug to treat impotence in men, is facing the possible legal challenge by federal prosecutors after it was linked to the potential birth control pill Viagra.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed by the Canadian Health Products Regulatory Agency (CHPA) on Thursday against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for failing to warn the public about the potentially dangerous drug use of sildenafil, the generic name for Viagra, which has been linked to serious side effects.
The drug, which was approved for sale in the U. S. in 1999, is available as a generic and as an over-the-counter product, with the brand name Revatio. A Canadian company, called Restasis, was also sued after it was found to have failed to warn the public about the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in men taking the drug, according to the CHPA.
The CHPA is currently seeking $7.9 million in damages from the drug company for failing to warn patients and health care professionals of the serious side effects of the drug. The government alleged the drug failed to warn the public that Viagra, which is sold in Canada, is dangerous and should not be taken.
